A deputy was shot, as was a suspected shooter, Monday after a man with a weapon was seen approaching a family courthouse in downtown Houston, the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office confirmed.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said he believes the deputy will survive, but offered no further details. No information was available on the condition of the suspected shooter.
The shooting happened after a deputy inside a jury assembly room saw a man with a weapon outside, walking toward the family law courthouse in the 1100 block fo Congress Street, Precinct 1 Assistant Chief Carl Shaw said.
The deputy went outside and chased the man, who then engaged in a shootout with deputies near the plaza in downtown Houston, Shaw said.
The suspect and one deputy were hit by gunfire, Shaw said. The deputy was shot in the back and taken to an unnamed hospital before being transferred to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center. The suspect was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann.
Justice Clint Morgan, of the First Court of Appeals, said he heard gunfire from his office.
Officials urged the public to avoid the courthouse as officers investigate the shooting. Court operations might be delayed or suspended temporarily.
A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said Houston police will lead the investigation into the shooting. Officials with the police department couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
