The T.E.A.R. round is a specialized 12-gauge shotgun cartridge designed exclusively for law enforcement and tactical teams. Its primary use is ballistic breaching, a tactical method that safely creates entry points, typically through doors, minimizing the risk of dangerous projectile ricochets. The round's frangible construction causes it to break apart upon impact, enhancing safety during forced-entry scenarios. This product is not available to the general public.
Engineered for maximum effectiveness, the T.E.A.R. round adheres to rigorous standards set by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI). It contains a 1.5-ounce payload and generates roughly 1,850 PSI muzzle pressure from a standard 12-gauge shotgun. This delivers exceptional kinetic energy ideal for breaching and specialized tactical operations.
The T.E.A.R. round meets federal government breaching requirements and effectively breaches both wooden and metal doors, as well as locks and hinges. It can also handle heavier commercial doors (Class 1 to Class 4), although alternative methods might be necessary for exceptionally robust doors. Additionally, the round includes UV-reactive material to clearly show impact locations and penetration effectiveness during training. This UV capability further aids post-operation forensic analysis, verifying appropriate and accurate usage.
Safety is paramount with the T.E.A.R. round due to its frangible nature. Although it can penetrate a 14-gauge steel plate, it does not pierce Level IIIA (HG2) soft body armor even at point-blank range, substantially reducing unintended risks during tactical entries.
Law enforcement professionals highly value the T.E.A.R. round for its controlled penetration capability, significantly minimizing risks to hostages or bystanders positioned beyond breached doors. Operators also report minimal blowback at close range, improving both safety and operational effectiveness. These safety and performance advantages have made it a preferred choice among law enforcement agencies.
The T.E.A.R. round is a 12-gauge, 2¾-inch cartridge initially developed for pump-action shotguns, such as the Remington 870 equipped with shorter breaching barrels, but it also reliably functions in various semi-automatic shotgun models. Stringent quality control measures ensure consistent powder charges, projectile weights, and precise cartridge dimensions. This meticulous attention to detail virtually eliminates jams or misfires, offering near-perfect reliability in operational conditions. Compatibility tests have demonstrated no issues when used in suppressor-equipped shotguns.
Manufactured entirely in the United States, the T.E.A.R. round primarily serves U.S. law enforcement agencies and authorized organizations. Exports are limited to countries with established cooperative agreements or official military and law enforcement affiliations with the United States.
