Charleston police have shot and killed a man they believe was involved in the wounding of a deputy at a gas station one week ago
Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis that the man emerged from an apartment complex after 10-hour standoff Thursday afternoon and shot at officers. Officers returned fire and killed the man.
Nearby Memminger Elementary school was put on administrative lockdown during the standoff. Police arrived on the scene around 4 a.m.
Berkeley County Lt. Will Rogers was shot in the back of the head at a gas station in Moncks Corner on May 14 as he was talking to a customer in the parking lot. A witness told investigators that a masked man walked out of the woods in front to the deputy's SUV and fired three rounds from a revolver.
On Tuesday, Rogers' daughter issued a public plea for information to help catch the suspect.
"He left our father there to die," Jaime Rogers Wyatt said during a news conference outside Medical University Hospital. "When the shooter shot Lt. Rogers, he didn’t just shoot a law enforcement officer. He shot a father, he shot a grandfather, he shot a Marine veteran, he shot a true public servant who has dedicated his entire life to serving and protecting all of us."
On the same day, Berkeley County Sheriff Butch Henerey announced an $11,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Rogers is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
