Suspect in Ga. Sheriff's Death Back In Custody

Jim Lowery was taken back into custody Tuesday night near the Laurens County jail after he escaped earlier in the day.

A suspect charged in the death of the sheriff of Montgomery County, Georgia was taken back into custody Tuesday night after he escaped earlier in the day.

Jim Lowery jumped out of a transport vehicle and ran as Treutlen County authorities were taking him to the Laurens County jail around 11:20 a.m. and was on the loose for close to 12 hours, according to WMGT-TV.

Officials said that an aviation unit observed the escaped inmate in a contained search area near the Laurens County Jail around 10:20 p.m. and ground teams were set in to Lowery's location where he was apprehended.

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office had issued an alert for the area around the jail and blocked off the area near Southern Pines Road and County Farm Road.

Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O'Connor died while pursuing Lowery on June 15. The suspect was taken into custody after a shootout with law enforcement.
