A Springfield Township, Ohio police K-9 that was shot after biting a fleeing suspect early Friday morning is recovering after surgery.
K-9 Pako was treated and released by the Grady Veterinary Hospital, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.
Springfield Township Police Chief Robert Browder said the German shepherd was shot in the shoulder by a suspect who was shot in the lower back after officers returned fire when he pointed his gun at them.
The suspect was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and was expected to survive.
The incident began when police pursued a male and a female for a suspected drunken driving offense in Springdale. The chase lasted for approximately 4 miles and ended around 1:50 a.m. near the intersection of Winton and North Bend roads in Springfield.
Stop strips were used to disable the suspects' vehicle and the female suspect exited the car and dropped to the ground while the male fled.
Pako then chased and bit the fleeing male, who turned and fired on the dog with a semi-automatic handgun.
