A North Charleston, South Carolina police officer is recovering after being shot during a standoff the afternoon of the Fourth of July.
Officer Wayne Pavlischek was struck by gunfire on the right side of his stomach, but was saved by his ballistic vest, according to WCBD-TV.
The three-year veteran of the force was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police received a report around 4:33 p.m. about a driver of a white vehicle who was trying to run over a pedestrian in the road on Waltham Road in Northwoods Estates. Officers arrived at the scene and secured a perimeter around 8174 Waltham while they attempted to contact the suspect whose vehicle was parked in the backyard.
The suspect suddenly appeared in a second story window of the house and fired multiple shots at officers. He then exited the front door and continued to fire at officers.
The suspect was then shot by officers and was transported to Trident Medical Hospital.
