A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper is recovering after he was wounded from gunfire from Mexico while on border assignment on Friday.
Trooper Danny Shaw and a Border Patrol agent were both shot near the Rio Grande river in Fronton shortly before 1 p.m. after a gunbattle erupted on the Mexico side of the border, according to InForney.com
Officials have not confirmed if the law enforcement officers were intentionally shot or if they were struck by errant bullets.
Shaw's wife, Melissa, told the news outlet that the bullet entered the trooper's pelvic area and exited through his right thigh. He currently has no feeling below his mid-calf in his right leg, but doctors said it may return after physical therapy.
The trooper's family is preparing for his release from a McAllen-area hospital for his return home to Forney this coming Friday.
"[Danny] is doing well, in good spirits, and feeling very blessed," Melissa said. "His doctor said he is one very lucky man."
Shaw said that that his rookie partner, Brandon Zellous -- along with Border Patrol agents -- shielded him and helped him to safety until a DPS helicopter could land and transport him to the hospital.
He is the older brother of Dallas County Community College District Police Department Corporal Bryan Shaw, who was injured in the line of duty during a deadly ambush on law enforcement in Dallas this summer that claimed the lives of five officers.
