HOUSTON -- A police dog was shot and an elementary school went into lockdown mode Wednesday afternoon as law enforcement officers pursued carjacking suspects in the Greenspoint area, authorities said.

Houston police and Harris County sheriff's deputies worked together to track three carjacking suspects who crashed their vehicle, Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliland said. The suspects' vehicle may have rammed the Houston police car carrying the K-9.

Houston police tweeted about 1:45 p.m. that the dog had been shot. A police spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment on who they believe shot the dog and what the condition of the animal is.

The suspects -- a man, a woman and a juvenile male -- ditched the car and fled on foot into a wooded area, Gilliland said. Sheriff's deputies and Houston police tracked down the three suspects and arrtested them.

Spence Elementary School went into lockdown mode for 20 minutes, Aldine ISD spokesman Mike Keeney said. The lockdown ended when police took the suspects into custody.
