A Baltimore City Public Schools police officer wrestled a gun away from a student during an altercation at a high school last month.
Officer Joseph Fair, who was unarmed at the time of the incident on Feb. 14, encountered two teens fighting in the cafeteria as students and staff at Carver Vocational Tech High School ate their lunch, according to Campus Safety Magazine.
Fair noticed one of the students reach for a handgun in the pocket of his jacket. He quickly seized the 32. Caliber Smith/Wesson, loaded with six rounds of ammunition before he the student into custody.
Major Akil L. Hamm Sr., Acticing Police Chief for Baltimore City Public Schools, commended Fair for actions and credited him for saving the lives of the teens and the students and staff in the cafeteria.
"His actions are indicative of the level of character, training and experience which he possesses and is indicative of the caliber of personnel employed by this agency," Hamm told the magazine.
In recognition of his actions, Fair was named Campus Safety Magazines's "Campus Safety Hero" for February.
