Ohio Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in Shooting at Mobile Home Park

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed Sunday morning after he responded to a report of a break-in at a mobile home park.
Sheriff Deb Burchett said in a news conference Sunday that Matthew Yates, who had been a deputy in Clark County for 15 years, died in the shooting.
Deputies were called to Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park at about 10:51 a.m. after receivg a report that an unknown female had broken into a residence, Burchett said. Several shots were fired as deputies arrived, Burchett said, and they went inside to investigate.
As they went inside, the deputies came under fire, Burchett said, and Yates was wounded. The deputy was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton but he died of his wounds.
“Please keep the Yates family in your thoughts and prayers, and the sheriff’s office in your thoughts and prayers,” Burchett said.
The sheriff did not release additional details during the news conference. The Dayton Daily News reports rescuers were unable to reach Yates for hours after he was shot.
The Daily News reports a woman had gone to the mobile home to check on a male family member who was having mental health issues. The man reportedly shot the woman and then at the deputies responding the residence. Both the man and woman died in the incident, which ended with the mobile home on fire, the Daily News reports.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate the shooting.
