MILTON, Fla. -- A Santa Rosa County sheriff 's deputy shot and killed a man who had barricaded himself in a home Thursday and said he expected to die, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Johann Felber, 45, was armed with a shotgun on the porch of a home at 4504 Galt City Road when deputies arrived just before 8 p.m ., according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. A woman had escaped from a disturbance there earlier.

Felber retreated inside after deputies ordered him to drop the gun, the news release said. A crisis negotiator was called to the scene and spoke with Felber on the phone. According to the news release, Felber was irate and told the negotiator that either the deputies would die or he would die.

Felber fired numerous shots inside the home while talking to the negotiator, according to the news release. Deputies could hear him reload his weapon.

About 8:45 p.m., Felber broke out a front bedroom window and pointed the shotgun at Deputy Andy Magdalanyoutsidethehome. Magdalany fired his weapon at Felber, who dropped from view. Deputies did not know if Felber was hurt. They sent in a robot that found him in a bedroom. Members of the sheriff 's SWAT team then entered the home and found the man dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was called in to investigate the incident.

Magdalany was placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed. That is the normal procedure after a deputy is involved in a shooting, according to the Sheriff 's Office.

Magdalany has been a sheriff's deputy since 2002. He was a member of the canine unit and the SWAT team.
