NEW BRUNSWICK, Canada -- Two police officers are among four confirmed dead and one person is in custody following an early-morning shooting in the eastern Canadian province of New Brunswick, police said on Friday.
"We can confirm that the suspect in custody is currently being treated for serious injuries related to this morning's shooting incident," police in the city of Fredericton wrote on Twitter.
Police said no names are being released at this time.
"Please appreciate this is a difficult time for their families and our colleagues," the police wrote. "We will provide more info when we can."
Police also confirmed that there is no further threat to the public, and lifted lockdown notices.
"Police still have the crime scene contained, and will be working the investigation for some time," officials tweeted.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted to the news of the shooting on Twitter.
"Awful news coming out of Fredericton. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting. We're following the situation closely," Trudeau wrote.
Canada's Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale tweeted a message of condolence to the families and friends of slain police officers.
"All of Canada stands with the two brave Fredericton Police officers who lost their lives protecting their community today," Goodale wrote.
Eyewitnesses told reporters at the scene that dozens of shots were fired in the Brookside Drive residential neighbourhood after 7 am (1000 GMT) on Friday.
Shortly before 9 am police evacuated the neighbourhood and urged others to avoid the area.
Pictures posted on social media showed police, firefighters and ambulances at the scene.
Fredericton is the capital of the eastern province of New Brunswick and is home to about 60,000 people.
