An off-duty Chicago cop returned fire after being followed and shot at early Monday, officials said.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting that happened about 5:15 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Dakin Street, in the Portage Park neighborhood, Jennifer Rottner, a COPA spokesperson wrote in an email.
The 24-year-old officer, who has not yet been identified, was driving when he noticed a gray sedan following him, the Chicago Police Department said in a media notification on Monday.
He turned into a parking lot near Dakin and North Lamon Avenue and the sedan followed. Two people got out of the car and started firing at him, police said.
The officer returned fire and the gunmen got back into the car and left the scene, police said.
No one was injured and no one is in custody as police continue to investigate.
