An Orange County man who state police said shot at two troopers Sunday afternoon has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.
Patrick Hermanowski, 39, of Westbrookville, a hamlet in the town of Deerpark, is facing felony charges after police said he exchanged gunfire with them.
State police said that around 2:50 p.m. Sunday, troopers and town of Deerpark police officers responded to a 9-1-1 report of a domestic dispute at a residence on Route 209 in Westbrookville.
The report said a man inside the home was firing a weapon. When the troopers and officers arrived, they were told Hermanowski had fled into a wooded area, in possession of the firearm.
State police said Hermanowski entered an abandoned Airstream trailer on Jagger Lane in Mamakating in Sullivan County in an attempt to hide from police.
As two responding troopers approached the trailer, Hermanowski allegedly fired his weapon at them from inside the trailer. Both troopers returned fire and Hermanowski came out of the trailer after being struck by the gunfire and was taken into custody.
Hermanowski, who suffered what state police described as non-life-threatening injuries, was provided with immediate aid at the scene by additional responding troopers, and then taken by ambulance to a hospital for further treatment. No troopers were injured.
A loaded firearm was located at the scene, police said.
Hermanowski was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.
He was arraigned in Mamakating Town Court and sent to the Sullivan County Jail.
The case remains under investigation by state police and the Sullivan County District Attorney's office.
