DETROIT—A suspect armed with an “arsenal of military-grade weapons” is in custody after an hourslong standoff that began after the man shot and killed his neighbor near the Detroit-Dearborn border.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the fatal shooting in the 8500 block of Robson Street stemmed from a dispute that began a year ago when the suspect’s Amazon package was mistakenly delivered to his neighbor.

The 2021 conflict resulted in a misdemeanor conviction and sentence of 60 days in jail but escalated into a deadly confrontation around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday. The suspect surrendered around 11:30 a.m.

White credited an “amazing hostage negation team” for contacting the suspect and getting him to surrender peacefully without harming himself or others.

Police evacuated several homes on Robson Street due to the presence of military-grade weapons. The suspect had at least nine handguns registered in his name.

“It’s problematic for us because they can travel long distances and do a lot of damage,” White said. “So, we asked neighbors to vacate the area.”

The suspect was the only person barricaded in the home during the standoff. There were several animals, including Guinee pigs in the home, White said.

The man surrendered after White promised to hear his side of the story.

“He wanted me to walk and talk with him so we walked and talked,” he said. “He gave me some information about his initial complaint. The sad thing is someone lost their life because of a package from Amazon.”

The man will be admitted to a hospital for evaluation before facing homicide charges, White said.
