Two San Antonio police officers were seriously wounded Thursday by a "very violent" armed man wanted on multiple warrants who was eventually apprehended after an hourslong standoff, according to police.
Officers received a tip about the suspect—Jesse Garcia, 28—at about 5 p.m., KSAT reports. Garcia "was out on two bonds and currently is wanted on three warrants, which is why we’re tracking him,” said Police Chief William McManus.
When police caught up with Garcia, he was riding in a vehicle with another person. Garcia noticed police following him, and he opened fire.
Gunfire struck an officer. A cruiser then collided with another unit about a block away from the shooting as Garcia fled on foot toward police.
Witnesses told police that gunfire was exchanged, and officers continued to pursue Garcia and another person in his vehicle.
During the chase, Garcia and his accomplice carjacked another vehicle. Another officer was struck by multiple shots as Garcia opened fire again.
Garcia made his way to an apartment building, where he barricaded himself. A standoff began at around 7 p.m., with police cutting power to the apartment building.
After around two hours, Garcia was taken into custody. He faces additional charges along with his arrest warrants.
The wounded officers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but details about their condition were not released. One officer was a six-year veteran, and the other had been with the department for four years.
The shooting is under investigation.
