A suspect has surrendered and is in custody following an hours-long barricade standoff at the CIA headquarters in McLean, Va.

The incident began around 10 a.m. on Wednesday when an armed man was spotted in an outdoor area not open to the public, prompting a large response from multiple law enforcement agencies and road closures throughout the area.

The unidentified man was reported as experiencing a mental health crisis and brandishing a handgun outside the building. At one point, he pointed the gun at his head, however no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The man surrendered to Fairfax County police negotiators roughly five hours after the situation started. The county said roads were reopened around 4 p.m.

“The barricade incident has been resolved,” Fairfax County police said on social media. “The suspect surrendered to FCPD negotiators and is in custody.”

As of Wednesday evening, it remained unclear what sparked the incident. CIA Police are leading the investigation and said “additional details will be made available as appropriate.”
