A Louisiana police chief was critically injured after being stabbed by a suspect Tuesday night.
Turkey Creek Police Chief Robert Glen Leggett was attempting to arrest 24-year-old Zackery Shane Deville for trespassing when the altercation occurred, according to KATC-TV.
A struggle ensued between the two men before Deville took out a knife and slashed Leggett across his left cheek.
Leggett was transported to Rapides Medical Center to undergo emergency surgery for wounds to his face and neck and was transferred to the ICU in critical condition.
Deville was arrested and taken into custody. He was the suspect in several trespassing accusations throughout the week as calls came into police about the man wandering around different neighborhoods in the town.
Turkey Creek Mayor Heather Cloud said that the town will hire another police officer while the chief is recovering and that the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office will help patrol the town in the meantime.
"The Village of Turkey Creek is grateful to God for preserving our Chief's life and we ask for continued prayers for our Chief, his family and our Village," Cloud said in a statement.
