A Nashville Metro police officer who was shot twice during a shootout with a suspect last week remained hospitalized on Monday.

Officer Samuel Galluzzi, who suffered gunshots to his thigh and ankle during a fatal exchange of gunfire with a shooting suspect, underwent surgery Saturday at at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to The Tennessean. The 24-year-old, two-year veteran of the department encountered Sershawn Martez Dillon 10:30 p.m. Friday night Overlook Ridge apartments near Buena Vista and Clarksville Pike.

Dillon is believed to be the same individual responsible for a stranger sexual assault that occurred in the same neighborhood just prior to his encounter with law enforcement.

Two other officers, Detective Zachary Ronan and Officer John Petriello, returned the gunman's fire, killing him. They were not injured in the shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has not yet released what led up to the shooting.
