A Sullivan County, Tennessee Sheriff's deputy died Tuesday afternoon after being shot three days earlier.
Sgt. Steve Hinkle responded to a home on Highway 11-W around 12:35 a.m. Saturday for a welfare check when 44-year-old Jack Scott Pendergrass opened fire, according to The Times News.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that about 45 minutes into a standoff with Pendergrass, the man again shot at officers. An exchange of gunfire took place between the suspect and officers and Hinkle was hit.
Hinkle was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center in critical condition and remained there until he succumbed to his wounds Tuesday.
The standoff didn't end until mid-Saturday afternoon when officers stormed the residence to find Pendergrass dead.
Following the deputy's death, dozens of police and rescue vehicles from throughout the region accompanied Hinkle's body as it was transported to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center at East Tennessee State University where an autopsy is to be performed.
Hinkle was a full-time Sullivan County Sheriff's Office employee for 25 years. Previously, he served as a reserve deputy for five years.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
