SAN MARCOS, Texas -- A San Marcos police officer returned to the job this week only eight weeks after sustaining serious gunshot wounds in an ambush that took a colleague's life.

Officers Justin Putnam, Franco Stewart and Justin Mueller responded to a domestic violence call the evening of April 18 when they were ambushed by a gunman who then killed himself.

Putnam was killed and Stewart and Mueller were wounded.

On Wednesday, Mueller returned the job and officials said that he's excited to be back.

"We’re excited to see his smiling face around the station," San Marcos Police officials said in a statement. "Thank you to everyone that sent well-wishes, prayers, and cards during his recovery."
