Aug. 25, 2021
An Orange police officer in Essex County was wounded in a shooting Tuesday, and a municipal officer was shot Monday in Washington Township in Gloucester County.

Two police officers were shot within a day of each other in different parts of New Jersey, authorities said Wednesday.

The latest shooting occurred about 9 p.m. Tuesday when an Orange police officer in Essex County was shot and wounded on a street near a park, police said.

The officer, who was not identified, was shot in the area of Elm and Hillyer Streets, not far from Colgate Park in Orange. ABC-7 reported that one person was in custody and police were seeking a second suspect.

The wounded officer was taken to the hospital by another police officer. The wounded officer was shot in the leg and is recovering at a Newark hospital, according to the report. NBC-4 news video showed two guns on the street near the park, in an area cordoned off with crime scene tape.

In an earlier police shooting, investigators said a municipal police officer was wounded during a shooting out in Washington Township, Gloucester County. Authorities have not said which department the officer works for. The suspect was identified as Arthur Henry Disanto Jr., 41. He faces several charges.

“In the last 24 hours, 2 New Jersey police officers have been shot in the line of duty,” the New Jersey State PBA said in a tweet. “Keep them and their families in your prayers.”
