“What started out as a fraud call quickly turned into a senseless violent attack on a police officer,” said Dayton's interim police chief.

DAYTON, OH— A police officer was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday night after he and a suspect exchanged gunfire.

According to police, the officer was called to a Dollar General at about 6:44 p.m. on a report of fraud. About 40 minutes later, the same officer tracked down the suspect on a street in Dayton.

The officer told the 39-year-old male suspect to stop, but the man instead hit the officer, police say. The officer then used a Taser on the suspect, knocking him to the ground.

Police say the suspect then took out a handgun and fired, hitting the officer in the side of the head. The officer fired back, hitting the suspect multiple times, police say.

“What started out as a fraud call quickly turned into a senseless violent attack on a police officer,” interim Police Chief Matt Carper said during a news conference Tuesday night, according to dayton247now.com.

Another police officer took the wounded officer to Miami Valley Hospital. The officer’s wounds are not considered life-threatening, reports say. The suspect was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he was in critical condition Tuesday night, according to police.

The Violent Crimes Bureau is investigating the shooting, while the Professional Standards Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation, police say.
