ATF Agent Seriously Wounded, Suspect Killed in Tenn. Shootout

Gunfire broke out in a Nashville parking lot as authorities were attempting to take a suspect into custody as part of a drug-related investigation.

An ATF agent was seriously wounded in a Tennessee shootout that left a suspect dead Tuesday.

The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. in a business parking lot in Nashville as part of a drug-related investigation, The Tennessean reports. Authorities were trying to take Corey Daniel Wellman into custody when shots broke out.

An unidentified agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was wounded in the exchange. The injuries were described as serious, and the agent was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, WZTV-TV reports.

No details were released concerning the nature of the injuries or the agent's condition.

Wellman, 40, was killed in the gunfight.

Although the incident happened across from the Metro Nashville Police Department headquarters, no officers exchanged gunfire in the shooting, and none were injured. 

The FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting.
