An Arizona sheriff's deputy is on life support after he was injured by a suspect Saturday.
The incident happened as a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy in Avondale was processing Clinton Robert Hurley, who was wanted on felony charges, The Arizona Republic reports. Hurley allegedly escaped in the deputy's vehicle, and a manhunt involving multiple agencies ensued.
Hurley was apprehended after he was wounded when he exchanged gunfire with a homeowner.
"This is the perfect example of what evil looks like," Sheriff Paul Penzone said at a news conference. "Somebody who doesn't deserve to live in a free society assaulted a good young man who is willing to protect you and your family."
The name of the deputy has not been released, but Penzone said he had been with the department for three years. The sheriff added that he was hoping for a miracle that would allow the deputy to recover from his injuries.
