The incident happened after a suspect struggled with Akron police when officers saw him allegedly tampering with a vehicle at an auto repair shop.

AKRON, OH—An officer was injured when a man trying to flee from police backed his vehicle into the officer and then ran over his legs, police say.

At about12:05 a.m. Saturday, police stopped the suspect, identified as James Workman, 47, after he was seen underneath and tampering with a vehicle at D&K Auto Repair on the 1200 block of East Archwood Avenue in the East Akron neighborhood.

Police say Workman began struggling with officers and managed to get into his vehicle, a 2011 Jeep Patriot. Workman is accused of accelerating backward and knocking over a police officer, then running over the officer's legs.

The officer, a three-year veteran whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police say he is expected to make a full recovery.

According to police, Workman led officers on brief chase before jumping out of the Jeep while it was still moving in the area of East Wilbeth Road an Hammel Street. Workman ran from the vehicle, but was caught minutes later on the 600 block of East Wilbeth Road in the Firestone Park neighborhood, police say.

Workman reportedly suffered a minor injury during his arrest. He was treated and released at Summa Health Akron City Hospital. He is currently being held in the Summit County Jail on charges of felonious assault, failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, obstructing official business, and violation of a protection order.
