Ala. Police Officer Breaks Arm in Scuffle with Suspect

The altercation happened while a Birmingham police officer was performing a welfare check at a convenience store when he was approached by a man in an aggressive manner.

A police officer’s arm was broken during a scuffle with a man at an east Birmingham convenience store.

The Birmingham officer at 10:05 p.m. Thursday was performing a welfare check at the Circle K on Montclair Road. While there, he was approached by a man in an aggressive manner, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

The suspectidentified as 29-year-old Thomas Ward—pushed the officer and appeared to be intoxicated.

The officer attempted to arrest the suspect and a physical altercation ensued. Backup officers arrived on the scene and were able to take Ward into custody.

The officer was transported to a local area hospital via a separate patrol officer. The officer suffered a broken arm.

Ward was booked into the Birmingham City Jail.

Detectives from Birmingham Police Department’s Felony Assault Unit will discuss the case with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office where additional charges will be pursued.
