Two St. Louis police officers were taken to the hospital—one in critical and unstable condition—after they were shot while approaching a car in Ferguson believed to be involved with an earlier homicide.

Two St. Louis police officers were wounded in a shooting Wednesday that sent one of the officers to the hospital in critial condition.

The incident happened at about 1 p.m. when officers spotted a car in Ferguson thought to be connected to a murder Tuesday, KDSK-TV reports. The officers approached the vehicle after following it for a bit, and that's when shots were fired.

One officer was struck in the abdomen and is in critical and unstable condition. In his 20s, the officer had been with the department just over three years.

"They are still working on him as we speak," said Police Chief John Hayden.

Another officer was shot in the leg, and his condition was not immediately known. He also is an officer in his 20s, and he has been with the department for nearly three years.

“I’m asking for the public to pray for our officer,” Hayden said. “This is a rough time. We just got officers struck by a car the other day, and in fact, one of them is here.”

Fellow officers had gathered at the hospital's emergency department following the shooting. St. Louis Tishaura Jones also was at the hospital.

Four suspects have been taken into custody stemming from the incident. St. Louis County police are handling the investigation.
