Texas Sheriff's Deputy Shot Trying to Arrest Robbery Suspect

When a Bexar County sheriff's deputies were trying to execute an arrest warrant, the suspect began firing at them, and a deputy was struck in the upper body.

A Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot while attempting to execute an arrest warrant Tuesday afternoon on the West Side.

At least two deputies with the fugitive apprehension unit were attempting to arrest a man in the 200 block of Demya Drive on the far West Side near Loop 410, Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

The deputies, including a sergeant, approached a shed that the man — who is 18 or 19 years old — was living in on the property and attempted to talk to him through the wall, Salazar said.

When they opened a door to the shed, the man began firing at them, and one deputy was hit once on his upper body.

Salazar said one "quick-thinking" deputy returned fire. At the same time, another deputy grabbed the wounded deputy, put him in a squad car and drove to University Hospital.

The deputy was in stable condition and is expected to survive, Salazar said.

Deputies said they were unsure whether the suspect was wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

As of early evening on Tuesday, a SWAT team had surrounded the location and was attempting to establish communications between negotiators and the suspect.

Salazar said the man, whom he did not identify as of Tuesday afternoon, was believed to still be at the residence after the shootout because he was wearing an ankle monitor, which indicated that it was still at the scene.

"We'd like him to give himself up so we can render aid to him and get him out of there and possibly save his life if he is injured," the sheriff said.

The man is wanted on two felony warrants, including one for aggravated robbery and another related to narcotics.

The area neighborhood was evacuated, including a pregnant woman who went into labor as deputies sectioned off the area.

"We understand this is an inconvenience to the neighborhood, but we're trying to resolve this as peacefully as possible," the sheriff said.
