Pennsylvania Officer in Critical Condition after Stabbing

While responding to a call, a Butler police officer was stabbed multiple times before he was able to fatally shoot his attacker.

A Pennsylvania police officer is in critical condition after he was stabbed multiple times Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. after the Butler Police Department received a report of a man acting erratically and jumping in and out of oncoming traffic, the Pennsylvania State Police stated in a news release. When an officer arrived at the scene, he immediately confronted the 35-year-old man, who was identified as John Ebberts.

A scuffle between the two ensued, and Ebberts stabbed the officer several times. The officer then fatally shot Ebberts, according to the state police.

The injured officer—a 27-year-old Marine veteran who had been with the department for three years—is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.
