Video: Off-Duty N.J. Officer Shot while Stopping Store Robbery

A suspect was taken into custody by Newark police after an off-duty officer was grazed by a bullet while trying to foil a robbery in progress at a West Orange convenience store.

An off-duty officer was shot Monday afternoon in West Orange but appeared to be physically OK, investigators said.

The officer, who was not identified, was apparently grazed by a bullet while attempting to intervene is a robbery in progress at a Krauszers convenience store on. S. Valley Road, according to a statement from the town.

A potential suspect and vehicle were detained by the Newark Police Department, the statement read. A spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said detectives had a man in custody.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment for the non-life threatening injury, authorities said.

The New Jersey State PBA tweeted that the officer was wounded and offered their thoughts and prayers for their recovery.
