The shooting happened when Sullivan County sheriff's deputies tried to stop a driver with outstanding arrest warrants who barricaded himself inside an outbuilding.

A Tennessee deputy was critically wounded when a suspect opened fire during an hourslong standoff early Friday.

The incident began when Sullivan County sheriff's deputies tried to stop a driver with outstanding arrest warrants just after 12:30 a.m., WJHL-TV reports. The driver—identified as Alan Coulter, 54—eventually reached an outbuilding and barricaded himself inside.

When deputies walked up to the building, Coulter allegedly began firing through the door. A bullet struck a deputy, and colleagues were able to pull the wounded officer to safety for medical treatment.

The deputy was taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition with serious injuries.

Area police departments, as well as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, responded to the incident, and authorities began negotiating with Coulter. An armored vehicle, a drone and a bomb squad unit were provided by the Kingsport Police Department.

Eventually, police were able to apprehend Coulter just before 9:30 a.m., according to the TBI. No other injuries were reported.

"We are thankful that our deputy is okay," the Sullivan County Sheriff's stated in an online update. "The Bristol Virginia Police Department and the Kingsport Police Department assisted our SWAT team in taking this suspect into custody this morning. The Tennessee Highway Patrol provided support to our agency as well."

The TBI is investigating the shooting.

"(A)gents continue to work to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews," the agency stated in a news release.
