A Wisconsin sheriff's deputy was shot multiple times during a traffic stop early Wednesday, and a manhunt was conducted to find the shooter.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. after a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy pulled over a vehicle at a Milwaukee intersection, WTMJ-TV reports. The deputy arrested the driver at the time, but a passenger broke away and fled on foot.
Shots were fired during the foot pursuit, and a deputy was struck in the arms and torso. The deputy was taken to the hospital, and his wounds weren't considered life-threatening.
"My thoughts are with the Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy who was shot this morning," acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a statement. "His courageous actions early this morning deserve our deepest gratitude. I wish him a speedy and full recovery. I also offer my appreciation to other members of law enforcement. They are working to make our community safer, often under difficult and dangerous conditions."
The body of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was discovered in the area of the shooting involving the deputy. Authorities, however, could not confirm if that person was a suspect in the initial incident, and a shelter in place order was issued out of an abundance of caution, according to Sheriff Earnell R. Lucas.
