Nine Phoenix police officers were injured, and a woman was in critical condition following a fatal standoff at a home Friday.
The incident happened at about 2 a.m. as officers responded to assist a woman with a man who was believed to have had a romantic relationship with her, KPHO-TV reports. A standoff ensued involving the man and a baby who was thought to be the former couple's child.
"There was a baby in the home who was at some point placed in a carrier and placed outside," Police Chief Jeri Williams. "As officers went to bring that baby to safety, the suspect continued to shoot."
Authorities said the standoff ended at around 7 a.m. Officers found the suspect dead inside the house.
Four officers were shot and wounded during the standoff, and four were injured by shrapnel. They were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition.
The woman also was injured during the incident, and she was in critical condition. The baby was unharmed.
"If I seem upset, it's because I am," said Williams of the shooting.
