7 San Antonio Police Officers Injured During Suicide Call Shooting

A gunman exchanged gunfire with San Antonio police during a suicide call at an apartment complex, injuring seven officers before he was found dead.

Seven San Antonio police officers were wounded Wednesday when a suicide call erupted in a shootout that left the suspect dead.

Police responded to a call concerning a suicide at an apartment complex shortly before 9 p.m., WOAI reports. An officer reaching the scene was struck by gunfire when a suspect began shooting.

The suspect continued shooting after backup arrived, and six more officers were injured. Three officers were struck by shrapnel, and four others suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

Chief William McManus said some residents evacuated from the complex, and others were told to shelter in place. A SWAT unit responded to the scene, and police and the suspect exchanged gunfire during a standoff.

The gunman was found dead from a gunshot wound when officers entered the apartment he was in at about 2:45 a.m. McManus said it wasn't known if the wound was self-inflicted or from the shootout with police.
