Three police officers were killed and two others wounded in a shooting Wednesday in southern Pennsylvania, authorities said.
The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, was shot dead by police at the scene in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said at a press conference.
The three deceased officers were members of the Northern York Regional Police Department, Philadelphia NBC affiliate WCAU reported. Another NYRPD officer and a York County Sheriff’s deputy were in critical but stable condition on Thursday evening.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said from the hospital where the two officers were being treated.
The officers were shot while following up on a “domestic-related” investigation that began yesterday, Paris said. Sources told WCAU they were serving a warrant, but did not provide specific details.
A massive law enforcement response swarmed the scene, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, just after 2 p.m. Authorities remained on the scene into the night, and Pennsylvania State Police took charge of the investigation.
“All the resources of the Pennsylvania State Police are being brought to bear,” Paris said, confirming officers were combing through a “large scene.”
“There are many details which at this point we are not prepared to release,” he added, but said the York County District Attorney’s Office was planning to share more details late Wednesday night.
A neighbor told local NBC affiliate WGAL that he saw police descend on a farm before he heard “at least 30” gunshots go off.
After the shots rang out, the local Spring Grove Area School District went into lockdown for several hours. Students were not dismissed and transported home until around 4:15 p.m., the district said.
York County was the site of another police officer’s killing earlier this year as well. Andrew Duarte of the West York Police Department was fatally shot at UPMC Memorial Hospital in February.
