Police and firefighters rescued three people Sunday after they fell through an icy lake in northern New Jersey, authorities said.
Officers with the Netcong Borough Police Department were called shortly before 5 p.m. to Lake Musconetcong on the border of Morris and Sussex counties for a report of a person on a motorcycle who fell through the ice, police said in a statement.
When they got there, a few people were on the ice pointing toward the direction of where they said a person went through, the statement said.
While police were there, another man fell through the ice. Officers used a rope to pull the man from the water, but a few seconds later, a woman fell through the ice, according to the statement.
The same officer threw a rescue rope to the woman and she was able to hold on as firefighters and a member of the first aid squad pulled her from the water and brought her to shore, the statement said.
Rescuers were also able to save a third victim – the man who had fallen through on his motorcycle – about 300 yards from the shoreline. They used ice rescue suits and a rescue sled “to make their way out to the initial victim who had fallen through the ice on his motorcycle,” the statement said.
Assistant Fire Chief Raymond Bock Jr. of the Netcong Borough Fire Department said Monday that all of the victims were safely removed from the icy waters and that all had survived.
