A Milwaukee police officer on bicycle patrol was injured Thursday night when he was struck by a hit-and-run motorist on the city's near west side, police said.

A Milwaukee police officer on bicycle patrol was injured Thursday night when he was struck by a hit-and-run motorist on the city's near west side, police said.

The officer was struck shortly before 9 p.m. in the 1500 block of W. Vliet St., according to a police department news release.

According to the release, the officer was conducting a traffic stop with and another bicycle patrol officer when he was struck by an eastbound automobile.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and was stopped shortly after 9 p.m. in the 1600 block of N. Water St.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and the officer was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to the statement.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the incident, the release said.
