An alleged carjacker carrying a handgun was shot and wounded when he jumped out of a vehicle and tried to escape Riverside police after officers attempted to make a traffic stop.

California police stopped an alleged armed carjacker who tried to flee a traffic stop in June, shooting and wounding the accused gang member.

The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. June 18 when Riverside police spotted a vehicle that had been taken during a carjacking, KCAL-TV reports. When the officers pulled up behind the car, the vehicle drove into an apartment complex parking lot.

That's when the driver—Eddie Madrigal, 42—and a passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. Madrigal was holding a gun in his right hand as he ran, and officers opened fire.

The driver was struck by the gunfire and rushed to the hospital. The passenger, also an accused gang member, was uninjured.

"Mr. Madrigal is a documented gang member currently on parole for robbery with use of a firearm," police said in a statement following the shooting.

According to PoliceActivity, officers recovered a .22-caliber hand with 10 rounds from the scene.

Madrigal was charged with carjacking, brandishing a firearm and other counts. He's being held on $1 million bond.

The passenger was detained following the including but was released when it was determined he was not involved with the carjacking.
