VEVAY TOWNSHIP, MI – A man killed after a lengthy confrontation with police Sunday afternoon along Interstate U.S. 127 was not handcuffed and wielded a knife in each hand at the time he was shot, according to video and still images shared by Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.
The individual was first reported by a passing motorist to be walking against traffic on the expressway near Barnes Road around 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6.
Soon after, a brief video taken nearby from the cellphone of civilian’s car circulated on social media, and although the view was partially obstructed by a police vehicle, a woman can be heard saying, “He’s got handcuffs on.”
In a brief press conference Monay, April 7, Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth did not identify the subject who was shot. However, he recounted the incident, adding the subject was also not shot in the back despite rumors.
“We never even touched the subject until after force was used,” Wriggelsworth said. “A less lethal taser option was deployed and proved ineffective. Law enforcement officers make decisions based on the totality of their circumstances, not a two-dimensional video that captures 10 seconds of a 13-plus-minute encounter.”
Wriggelsworth said Michigan State Police is handling the investigation into the incident, and per policy, the deputy involved was placed on administrative leave until further notice.
He said he felt it was important “as sheriff to provide more context in light of some public sentiment.”
One video shared on Monday showed the man running toward a police vehicle near a sign noting the Barnes Road exit was a mile away. As he advanced, each hand held a knife.
A second video showed the man jumping a barrier and running toward police with accompanying stills more closely showing the knives waved in close proximity to officers.
“After the force was used, multiple deputies, officers, troopers and paramedics rendered life-saving aid to the subject for the better part of 25 minutes,” Wriggelsworth said, “but ultimately, (they) could not save the individual.”
According to the sheriff’s department, one official on scene Sunday was treated for minor injuries. Neither the initial report nor the sheriff indicated from which agency the affected official represented.
Vevay Township is about 30 miles south of Lansing.
