A man needed to be rescued by the NYPD after leading officers on a high-speed chase and then trying to elude authorities by jumping into a river over the weekend.

The incident happened Saturday when NYPD officers observed Adam Hernandez driving a stolen car along the Hutchinson River Parkway, WABC-TV reports. Hernandez refused to stop for police, sparking a high-speed chase.

Once officers caught up with Hernandez, they found he had abandoned his car and jumped in the Hutchinson River in an effort to try to escape police. A boat was deployed, and officers pulled Hernandez to safety.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital, and the charges he faces include reckless endangerment and criminal possession of stolen property.
