Watch LAPD Officer Try to Stop Runaway Cruiser During Chase

Nov. 7, 2022
While trying to apprehend a shooting suspect who was fleeing on foot, LAPD officers jumped out of their SUV to confront the man, but the vehicle wasn't in park.

A bystander captured an awkward moment for LAPD officers when their cruiser began rolling away after they jumped out to pursue a suspect on foot last week.

The incident happened Thursday as the officers were trying to apprehend a shooting suspect at a mall in Los Angeles' Canoga Park neighborhood, KABC-TV reports. As the two officers got out of their SUV to confront the man, they forgot to put the vehicle in park.

The officer who had exited the cruiser's front passenger side quickly tried to jump back inside as the cruiser continued to roll backward past parked cars in the mall's lot. It's not known if the SUV struck any vehicles while it was driverless.

Police did eventually capture the suspect at neighboring gas station.
