A suspect fled the scene of a domestic violence call and led Suffolk County police on a 45-minute chase before driving off a 100-foot cliff into Long Island Sound.

New York police pulled a driver from Long Island Sound after he survived driving off a 100-foot cliff and plunging into the water below during a 45-minute high-speed chase Monday.

The pursuit began when Suffolk County police responded to a domestic violence call in Southold on Long Island, The Associated Press reports. A suspect fled the scene, and a chase ensued along Long Island, with the fleeing driving reaching speeds of up to 100 mph.

In Greenport, the suspect drove toward Long Island Sound and did not stop, driving off a high cliff and landing in 3 to 5 feet of water.

"Never hits the brakes, never slows down," Police Chief Martin Flatley told Newsday. “Hits an embankment at the end of the street, goes airborne over the bluff, off the beach and into Long Island Sound.”

Officers went into the water and were able to rescue the driver, who had no visible injuries and only complained of pain.

Police arrested the suspect, and charges are pending.
