A San Bernardino police officer collided with a motorcyclist Sunday, Sept. 18, while responding to an unrelated crash in the area, leaving the motorcyclist hospitalized, police said.

Around 2:30 p.m., the patrol officer was responding to the area of Waterman Avenue and Caroline Street with its emergency lights and siren on for a crash that happened in the area, said Sgt. Equino Thomas, spokesman for the San Bernardino Police Department. While heading south on Waterman Avenue, the officer entered the intersection of 5th Street, and the crash unfolded with the motorcyclist traveling east on 5th Street, Thomas said.

It wasn't immediately clear who entered the intersection first.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for treatment while the officer was uninjured, Thomas said. The motorcyclist's condition was not known as of Sunday evening, according to Thomas.

Police were investigating if any traffic laws were broken leading up to the crash, Thomas said.
