WYOMING, PA—A 63-year-old man died and the West Pittston police chief was badly injured in a nasty crash Thursday that shut down Wyoming Avenue in both directions for hours.

The crash, involving a West Pittston police pickup truck driven by police Chief Michael Turner, and another vehicle occurred around 4:45 p.m. in front of the Midway Shopping Center.

Turner, the borough's chief since July 2017, was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Twp., West Pittston Mayor Angelo Alfano said.

As of 7:45 p.m., Alfano said he was waiting to personally see Turner, but those who had told him the chief suffered a broken hip.

"He's in the hospital. He's alert. They are just running a bunch of tests on him," Alfano said. "Mike is one of the best. He's very well known and respected."

Alfano said Turner was on duty at the time of the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle, who was not immediately named, died at a local hospital, authorities said.

State police took charge of the investigation and sent an accident reconstruction team to investigate.
