2 N.D. Law Enforcement Vehicles Struck in Chain Reaction Crash During Chase

Grand Forks police were helping a Traill County deputy and North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers pursue a fleeing motorist when the suspect struck cruisers from separate agencies.

GRAND FORKS, ND — During the pursuit of an allegedly fleeing motorist Sunday night, Aug. 18, two law enforcement vehicles were struck.

The Grand Forks Police Department was asked to assist a Traill County deputy and North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers in their pursuit at approximately 9:51 p.m., according to a press release from the GFPD.

The suspect's vehicle ended up striking a Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle, losing control and running into a GFPD squad car before coming to rest at the intersection of Cherry Street and 28th Avenue South, the release said.

The driver was identified as Shawn Bjerke. He was placed under arrest for reckless endangerment, fleeing in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license and DUI.

Bjerke was transported to the Grand Forks County Correctional Center after he was treated at Altru Hospital for minor injuries, the release said.
