Mo. Police Officer Seriously Injured in Head-On Collision During Chase

When Independence police were pursuing a vehicle that fled a traffic stop, the driver made a U-turn on an exit ramp and crashed head-on into a cruiser.

A Missouri police officer was seriously injured after a head-on collision with a driver who fled a traffic stop early Thursday.

The incident happened just after 5 a.m. when Independence police tried to pull over a driver on Interstate 470 at Interstate 70, KCTV-TV reports. A chase ensued along Interstate 70 when the driver would not stop.

While on an exit ramp, the driver made a U-turn and headed back into the pursuit. The driver's vehicle collided head on into an Independence police cruiser.

The driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died. An officer in the cruiser also was rushed to the hospital. No details were released concerning the condition of the seriously injured officer.

Police are investigating the incident.
