Video: Accused Distracted Driver Crashes into Fla. Deputy
A Florida deputy was injured Thursday when an alleged distracted driver crashed into the deputy's cruiser.
The incident happened when a St. Lucie County sheriff's deputy—a six-year veteran with the agency—had stopped to pick up debris along Interstate 95, the sheriff's office stated in an online update. That's when a distracted motorist in a pickup truck failed to move over for the deputy and struck her cruiser while the deputy was still inside.
The deputy and driver of the other vehicle were both rushed to the hospital following the crash, and both are expected to recover. Sheriff Keith Pearson told WPTV-TV both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
"(The deputy is) doing well and is eager to get back to work," the sheriff's office stated.
The driver is being cited for violations of the state's Move Over law, said Pearson.
"We have two totaled vehicles that all could have been prevented had that driver just been paying attention," he said.
