A Warren police officer is in serious but stable condition after a car crash that happened as he chased a suspect fleeing from a traffic stop.
Officials said they arrested the suspect, a 33-year-old man, and his 12-year-old daughter — a passenger in his vehicle during the crash — was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Authorities said the incident began before noon Thursday when a Warren police officer on patrol tried to conduct a traffic stop on a silver Cadillac sedan in the area of Interstate 696 and Dequindre Road for a license plate violation.
The Cadillac's driver failed to stop and the officer gave chase, continuing south on Mound Road towards Eight Mile Road, according to investigators.
Officials said the Cadillac's driver ran a red light at Eight Mile and Mound and crashed with two vehicles.
As an officer chasing the suspect approached the intersection, he was in a single-vehicle crash, police reported.
Firefighters extricated the officer from the vehicle, who was taken to a hospital, they said. Officials reported it appears his injuries are not life-threatening at this time.
Officials said the injured policeman is a 3.5-year veteran of the department.
Meanwhile, the suspect driver was arrested at the scene of the crash without incident, police said. He was taken to the Warren Police Department to await charges.
Police also said the occupants of the other vehicles involved in the crash with the suspect did not require medical attention.
They said the cause of both crashes is under investigation and southbound Mound Road near Eight Mile was expected to be closed for several hours.
The incident follows other pursuits in the region.
