The Boston Police Department is welcoming a new ice cream truck to its fleet -- continuing a program that has been a success since it was launched six years ago.
Police Commissioner William B. Evans, and other officials unveiled the truck, which will be used as a part of "Operation Hoodsie Cup," Monday at police headquarters, according to The Boston Globe.
The program has handed out some 120,000 free ice cream cups to area children since it debuted in 2010. The department's original ice cream truck will be retired.
"When you think about community policing . . . you think about relationships on the street," Walsh said. "This is a way to have the police and young people interact in a positive setting."
The new truck cost $89,000 and will be driven by community service officers through September.
